Leaders in Liverpool have welcomed Royal Assent for a new law which will create the UK’s first smoke-free generation. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will make it illegal to sell tobacco to anyone born after 1 January 2009, and will come into force from January 2027.Liverpool has committed to reducing smoking prevalence to less than one per cent of the population by 2040 and is currently reducing the rate faster than the North West and England. However, there are still around 50,000 people who smoke in the city.It is hoped that the new age restrictions and proposed powers to extend smokefree rules to certain outdoor public spaces will protect children and young people from the harmful lifelong effects of smoking. Last year 3,644 smokers across Liverpool were supported to give up smoking through the local smoking cessation service, Smoke Free Liverpool.
Cheshire and Merseyside come together this autumn to raise awareness of suicide prevention and support for all.
Some areas in Cheshire and Merseyside experience amongst the highest rates of death from suicide in the UK. Led by a partnership, including local authorities in Cheshire and Merseyside, this joined-up programme reflects a shared commitment across the subregion to prevent suicide and support those affected. Throughout September and October, a series of events will take place in Liverpool, bringing together people and organisations, locally through to internationally, along with experts and those with lived experience to highlight the importance of suicide prevention and support for those impacted by suicide. This is the first time Liverpool has hosted such a wide range of events focused on suicide prevention and mental health support. It reflects a strong and growing commitment across the city and wider Cheshire and Merseyside subregion to tackle stigma, raise awareness, and supportive conversations and access to help. These events create an opportunity to come together, look out for each other and remind everyone that support is always available if you reach out. No one needs to suffer alone. Where to go for help: The Kind to your mind website urgent help page offers support for all age groups, directing people to local services and national organisations. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available 24/7:

The book has won a Breaking Boundaries Literary Award with the Chrysalis Brew Project: Warning: If you’re easily offended, morally outraged by a few swear words, or the kind of judgemental asshole who polices how women should behave after a certain age — then kindly shut this book and carry on living your safe, beige little life. This isn’t for you. Still here? Good. That tells me you’re one of the few with guts. A spark. A flicker of rebellion under the surface. Maybe you’re quietly fed up. Or maybe, like me, you’ve hit a point in your life where you’ve thought: “Is this it?” You’ve ticked all the boxes, played by the rules, been the good girl, the wife, the mother, the employee — and now you’re looking in the mirror wondering what the fuck happened to the woman you were before you made yourself smaller to fit in.This book is my middle finger to mediocrity. It’s about tearing up the script after 50, but it's for anyone who is ready to start again. Living life on your terms — no matter what anyone thinks. I left a marriage, rebuilt my body, reclaimed my confidence, and discovered that the second act can be even more thrilling than the first — if you’ve got the balls (or in my case, the boobs) to go for it.So if you’re ready to laugh, cry, wince, and maybe get a kick up the arse in the process — turn the page. Because you’re going to die.So do it anyway.
