Pushing a pram along the pavement last year I was fuming to come to the end of the road to cross and a thoughtless driver had blocked the crossing. This meant I had to steer my pram into the road and into oncoming traffic just to cross the road. It prompted me to set up a Facebook page "Parking Like aT*** in Liverpool. Since then we've had hundreds of people post inconsiderate parking. For those who are unfamiliar with the considerations of parking, pavements were set up for the use of pedestrians to walk safely on. They were not built for people to drive on or block. This has a severe effect on blind people, who need to navigate an alternative route when a completely selfish driver has blocked their pathway.
It has also prompted a debate on when it is acceptable to park in parent and children bays. Some people don't know how to park and literally just turn off the engine and abandon their vehicles wherever. Some of the time this blatant disregard for others and is mildy amusing, often it is infuriating.
A recent post on the Facebook page shows someone parking in a dedicated disabled spot in the middle of the night. Again,a similar driver parked in a child and baby spot when the rest of the car park was empty.
So what, you may ask, if there are loads of spaces, why not? But it's the principle. I didn't know disabled people and parents had curfews, are they not expected to go out at night during unsociable hours? Any parent will tell you that if you have a baby you're often seen wandering down the supermarket aisles in the middle of the night to comfort a baby who refuses to sleep. And what about the working parents who are busy in their jobs all day, organising their families in the evening and only when they have gone to bed do they find the time to go to the supermarket, often with a baby in tow?
Bad parking is as heinous as littering or putting your feet on chairs on public transport. It is disrespectful and shows little regard for your neighbours. It's bad manners, rude and insulting to park badly, you're making a statement saying you that you don't care about others. It's arrogant and an ugly trait.
Inconsiderate parking affects everyone yet is highly dangerous. Parking on,lines outside school gates is dangerous and puts children's lives at risk, all to save a few moments of walking 100 metres or so to a safe spot. There is of course a difference between parking inconsiderately, such as taking up 2 spots in a busy car park and parking dangerously, such as on a corner blocking the view for both pedestrians and drivers. .Either way this needs to be tackled and hopefully this Facebook page will make people think twice about they way they leave their cars. I was at a supermarket last week and overheard someone say to their friend, "Be careful how you park, you'll end up on that "Parking Like a T***" site. Indeed they will.
