School’s almost out for summer! GCSE exams are over and teenagers can look forward to a lengthy break.
Of course they have one more trip to school with the school prom at the end of the month. While I am all in favour of a good send off, the rise of the popularity of prom really irritates me. For a start this American tradition is not necessary over here. Why can't kids have a good old fashioned party? Without it turning into a n event where teens and their parents try to outdo each other. Dress are bought or even commissioned to me made months in advance at cost of several hundreds of pounds. Then there's the hair and make up to be booked in with the professional make up artists and stylists. And who has to fit the bill? Us parents of course becausee we have nothing better to spend our money on than a flipping' glorified school disco.
When did proms become such a necessity? And seriously how many people will these kids seriously keep in touch with years down the line? All this expense to impress people they, for the most part, have ignored or fallen out throughout their school years.
This, my friends, is the most wonderful time of the year. I don’t understand parents lobbying for shorter school holidays - why have children if you don’t want to spend time with them? We only realistically have 18 summers with them before they fly the nest go off with their friends, so I want to cherish every moment. It’s the only time of the year I put down the laptop and spend all day with them frolicking in the sun.
For and my brood holidays are a happy, carefree time. As always we’ll be heading to Cyprus for a month. We know what to expect, it is home from home and we have friends we meet out there every year. For some though, a holiday can be fraught with stress. In a typical household people are running around doing different things, popping in and out, running errands and generally going about their lives. Yet a holiday puts all the daily routines on hold, people are thrown together for long periods of time and it can become frantic. I have been there, my husband gets anxious on holiday, he doesn’t like to be away from home for long periods. We used to have conflict but now he prefers to stay in the UK. That’s ok, we’re home all year round together and probably spend more time together than most married couples. So it’s literally a break when we’re away.
And absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder. Whatever you're up to this summer enjoy making those special memories with people you love.
