It's tough running a business, ask anyone. But what's even harder is maintaining the business on a weekly basis and sustaining the level of service and productivity over time.
In the past decade I have built my business up to be in a position of travelling every month for the next six months, always for pleasure, often for business. This has always been a dream, I have launched events which excite and engage people and bring businesses together to celebrate their achievements. I have produced a magazine that is interesting to read as well as informative of local business services.
Business owners make it look effortless but in reality we are all battling insecurities of whether we are good enough, whether we will find new business and how we can improve what we are currently doing. It's a daily concern and we often have conversations with our minds about it.
Which is why it is crucial to have a business performance coach to steer you through these unsettling thoughts. For the past ten years I have sought the advice of top performance mentor Darren Lawrenson, who is also a columnist in Lifestyle magazine and a huge inspiration to me.
He knows my business, he knows my mind and my goals and he is there to help me achieve them. He doesn't tell me what to do for only I can do that. He doesn't tell me that I should do anything. I don't have to do anything at all really. What he does say is that I can choose to do X,Y and Z.
When you say to yourself that you HAVE to do something, you are creating a thought pattern that if you fail to hit that target, you are setting yourself up for failure, which you then tell yourself that you are a loser. This negative pattern results in your need to do it again and so repeating the cycle. As the law of attraction will tell you, nothing is gained through need. Need sends out a message of lack and so in turn that is what you will get back.
When you choose to do something, you're sending out an intention that you are putting plans in place.
My mind is capable of going off on a tangent but I know that it can be brought back to where I want it to be; focused on my business. It's just that I need to be reminded and that it where Darren helps.
I am easily distracted with travel plans, opportunities to collaborate with different people, networking events and social invitations. Sometimes I am so busy spinning these plates that I forget to focus on the heartbeat that allows this freedom. Lifestyle magazine. Working from home it is easy to procrastinate. A quick check on social media turns into an hour wasted when I could be making phone calls and setting up meetings to bring in new business.
Darren brings my mind right back to where it needs to be and my coaching sessions with him leaves me skipping with enthusiasm and possibilities for even greater success. I trust his guidance and follow it explicitly because he knows what he is talking about. He has built up companies from nothing and sold them.
Lifestyle magazine is my passion, it hasn't outrun every other publication in the city because it is driven by passion. It's also a great product, a fantastic read and it helps businesses advertise their wares. It is my USP for my business and I will not allow it to be taken for granted.
I have created a level of income that I have always aspired to achieve. Money motivates me because it provides me with choices, freedom and joy to share with people I love and care about. We all know that humans are driven by two feelings: pain and pleasure. My current pleasurable experiences are off the scale and I have the potential to go a little bit crazy which will in turn lead me to ignore areas in my business which shouldn't be ignored.. So I need to be reminded of the pain of lack. The pain of the grind of working month in and month out to establish my lifestyle. The constant chasing of people. The monthly worry about paying my mortgage and my bills.
I am on a journey I have visualised and i haven't reached my destination, but it is so easy to get off and have a rest. 95% of the population are staying there but I am determined to get to where which is why a performance coach is so integral to my business success. As a business owner I am so busy in my little life that I often forget what is happening on the other side of the street, it is important for someone outside can look in and see where I am going wrong, where I can make improvement and maximise my potential
As Ronan Keating once sang that life is a rollercoaster, there will always be highs and lows. But the mechanics that drive the rollercoaster remain steady and reliable at the base, a bit like my magazine at the epicentre of the Lifestyle Awards, Positive Awards and fashion shows.
So today and everyday moving forward I set my intentions to carry out certain practices because I choose to focus on my business. I choose to be top of my game and I choose to love the lifestyle that I am living.
