Why Women Over 50 Should Stop Apologising for Having a Life: I rolled out of a nightclub at 3am this morning. And I’m telling you because somewhere along the way, we decided that being successful means looking a certain way, behaving a certain way and being “professional” 24/7. Well… I’m not interested. I’m 54. I run my own business, I work in PR and personal branding, I create events, build brands, network, write, sell, hustle and somehow keep about seventeen plates spinning at once. And yes, sometimes I roll out of a nightclub at 3am. I have absolutely no intention of apologising for it. Success Doesn’t Have an Age Limit There is still this ridiculous idea that women over 50 should somehow become quieter. More sensible and beige and tucked up in bed by by 10pm with a cup of herbal tea. Pffff. Why? Getting older doesn't mean becoming invisible, and it certainly doesn't mean giving up the parts of your personality that make you interesting. In fact, I think the opposite should happen. By 50, you should know who you are, what you want and — importantly — what you really don't give a shit about anymore. You Can Be Professional Without Being Boring I take my business seriously. My clients expect results. My reputation matters. My work matters. But professionalism doesn't mean pretending to be someone you're not. You can be ambitious and have a life. You can run a serious business and dance until 3am.You can be successful, loud, glamorous, funny, chaotic, energetic, opinionated and completely yourself. Your personality isn't a liability, it's part of your brand and this is exactly why I love the idea of a midlife revolution. Women over 50 are not disappearing into the background. We're starting businesses, changing careers, travelling, networking, dating, partying, creating, leading and doing things on our own terms. And perhaps that's the real definition of success. Not fitting into somebody else's mould. Not behaving how you're “supposed” to behave at a certain age. Not worrying whether someone thinks you're too old, too loud or too much. Just building a life that actually feels like yours. So when I posted a blog on socialed about this, I was hit by a comment by a man obviously. He said, "I disagree with this mindset. If you genuinely want to elevate yourself and your business, sacrifice comes with it. You can’t expect exceptional results while holding onto every part of your old lifestyle. Sometimes you have to cut the 3am nights, prioritise your sleep, health and work, and simply lock in. It’s all about having discipline and delayed gratification" I’ve spent two decades sacrificing sleep, freedom, spontaneity, holidays, evenings out and huge chunks of my own life raising children while building a business around them. I know exactly what sacrifice, discipline and delayed gratification look like. I didn’t “hold onto my old lifestyle” — I put my children first for two decades. They’re grown now. So forgive me if I don’t feel guilty about rolling out of a nightclub at 3am while still running a successful business the next morning. There comes a point when women are allowed to stop sacrificing themselves and actually enjoy the life they spent years working to build. Discipline got me here. Now I’m enjoying the rewards Your age is not an expiry date. Your personality is not a liability. And your life does not have to fit somebody else's idea of what success looks like.
